The title of this piece is a combination of two words. The first of these is “exosphere,” homophonous with the title but spelled differently. The exosphere is the outermost region of the atmosphere, made up of the lightest gases. My piece begins with wisps of sounds and progresses gradually to denser textures, suggesting the path of an object from space falling to the surface of the earth. The second word in the title is the first part of the Latin verb “exspirare,” meaning “to breathe out.” All the sounds in Exosphir are derived from a single source: a sound clip of the composer’s blowing across the top of a bottle. These sounds were then processed and arranged using the programs Mammut and CSound. Exosphir was premiered at the Eastman School of Music on May 5, 2008.
