A mystical setting of two texts, in Latin. The first section uses the words of the ”O magnum mysterium,“ and in the second section the sopranos join with an adaptation of the original plainchant tune to the words of the “Hodie Christus natus est.”
Text: Medieval, unattributed, in Latin
English translation: O great mystery and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord lying in a manger. Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear Christ the Lord. Today Christ is born; today the Savior appears; today on earth angels sing, archangels rejoice. Today the righteous rejoice, saying: “Glory to God in the Highest, Alleluia.” Amen.
