Spacing and Doubling

So far, all the triads we have seen have been packed very tightly together. Real music tends to put different amounts of space between the notes of chords, and tends to repeat, or double, some notes in multiple octaves. Take a look at the four version of the exact same chord below, and listen to how the different spacings and doublings sound.


The steps for identifying chords are the same, even when dealing with doublings! Just ignore the doubled notes and imagine a root-position triad, as you did before.

Identify the root, quality, and inversion of the following triads by clicking on the root and selecting the quality and inversion. Experiment with different doublings and spacings as you construct the chords-- use 12 notes, or only three! See what spacings and doublings sound best to you!
